Hordenine

Common Names: Peyocactin, N,N-Dimethyltyramine, Anhaline

Scientific Names: 4-[2-(Dimethylamino)ethyl]phenol

Summary

Hordenine, an alkaloid belonging to the phenethylamine class, is naturally occurring in various plants, notably barley (Hordeum species). It is chemically derived from N-methyltyramine and is the N,N-dimethyl derivative of tyramine, sharing some pharmacological properties with this biogenic amine. Commonly found in nutritional supplements, hordenine is claimed to be a central nervous system stimulant with potential weight loss benefits by enhancing metabolism. Experimental studies in animals, particularly through parenteral administration, have shown effects on blood pressure and various physiological systems. However, these effects are not consistently reproduced with oral administration, and limited scientific reports on hordenine's effects in humans have been published. Investigated for its potential fat-burning effects, hordenine is associated with adrenergic activity, but current research is insufficient to draw definitive conclusions or support its widespread use as a nutritional supplement. As of April 2019, hordenine is listed on the FDA's Dietary Supplement Ingredient Advisory List, indicating concerns about its lawfulness in dietary supplements.
